Researchers found that continual exposure to the food dye Allura Red AC harms gut health and promotes inflammation in animal studies. Allura Red AC may also go by the names Food Red 17 and FD&C Red 40.
They found that the dye directly disrupts gut barrier function and increases the production of serotonin, a hormone and neurotransmitter found in the gut. This subsequently alters gut microbiota composition leading to increased susceptibility to inflammatory bowel conditions such as colitis.
The study suggests a link between this commonly used food dye and inflammatory bowel diseases, making it alarmingly clear to steer clear of foods and drinks that include food dyes to maintain good health.
